EU will continue temporary protection for Ukrainians by March 2027

The European Commission also prepares recommendations for Member States for further integration of those who work or study, as well as ensure free return home.

Details: Temporary protection for Ukrainians in the EU will be extended by March 4, 2027, after which its action will be completed, but the European Commission will propose recommendations to Member States on further coordinated actions, Brunner and Chernyshov reported.

The next step in the approval of the said decision of the European Commission – the EU Council should formally approve the proposal to continue temporary protection for the year and proposal to adopt the recommendations of the EU Council.

Recommendations prepared in the European Commission for the EU Council contain:

  • Promoting and facilitating the transition of Ukrainians to other legal statuses: those who integrated into host societies, learned a language, found work or education, should be able to move to national or European legal status that better reflect their new situation. This may be a residence permit on the basis of work, education, research or national status of a long -term resident.
  • Creation of voluntary return programs in close coordination with the Ukrainian authorities to ensure the gradual return of Ukrainians home after the expiration of temporary protection. Authorization for introductory visits to Ukraine for those who are considering home returning to make a reasonable decision.
  • The beginning of the work of unity centers in EU Member States-both to assist the integration of Ukrainians in the host states and to return to Ukraine. Centers can be funded at the expense of the Commission under the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF). In order to support the Member States, the Commission will also appoint a special envoy for Ukrainians in the EU.
  • Coordination and exchange of information between Member States and Ukraine through the Solidarity Platform, and a platform for registration of persons in need of temporary protection.
  • “European Truth” has already reported that the temporary protection of Ukrainians in the EU will continue for another year – according to the Ambassador of Ukraine to the EU Vsevolod Centsov.

    Recall:

    • The EU Council continued temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 2026.
    • As of March 31, 2025, the status of temporary protection in the European Union had just over 4.26 million people who are not EU citizens and escaped from Ukraine as a result of full -scale Russian aggression.
