Details: Three Russian sources have specified that the Kremlin’s head wants the “written” obligation of the great Western powers not to extend NATO to the East – that is, it means the official exclusion of membership of Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova and other former Soviet republics.

Russia also wants Ukraine to be neutral so that some Western sanctions are removed from the Russian Federation to resolve the issue of frozen Russian sovereign assets in the West and that “Russian -speaking citizens of Ukraine be protected.”

According to one of the Reuters interlocutors, if Putin realizes that he will not be able to reach a peace agreement on his own terms, he will try to show Ukrainians and Europeans with the help of military victories that “peace will be even more painful tomorrow.”

The Kremlin did not respond to the Agency’s request to comment on these messages.

Putin and Russian officials have repeatedly stated that any peace agreement should be aimed at eliminating the “root causes” of the conflict. In fact, the Russians have the issue of NATO expansion and support of Ukraine by the event.

Kiev has repeatedly stated that Russia cannot be vetoed for its desire to join the Alliance. Ukraine also says that it requires strong security guarantees that would restrain any future Russian attack.

NATO also stated in the past that it would not change its open door policy just because Moscow requires.

Prehistory:

  • In March, Putin stated that Russia agreed to terminate the fighting in Ukraine, but there are a number of issues that need to be resolved.
  • At a press conference on December 14, 2024, Putin stated that the war against Ukraine would end when he reaches all his goals.
  • Last June, Putin outlined his initial conditions for immediate termination of the war. The Kremlin head demands that Ukraine abandon its ambitions on NATO and bring all its troops from all over the four Ukrainian regions, which Russia is claiming and partially controlled by Russia.
