Prehistory:
- Shabunin previously accused President Vladimir Zelensky’s office of pressure due to exposing corruption schemes in the defendant, and warned that the only way to close his mouth was to “do it physically.”
- In March 2024, the head of the Corruption Center Vitaliy Shabunin stated that the State Bureau of Investigation had registered two criminal proceedings against him: for “evasion of military service” and “forgery of documents from NAPC”.
- Shabunin himself stated that he voluntarily mobilized in the Armed Forces in the early days of the war and showed a photo of a military ticket stating that he took the oath of military oath on February 25, 2022.
- On July 11, the DBR announced Shabunin of suspicion of evasion of military service and fraud.
- Shabunin called President Vladimir Zelensky after the searches and stated that he was taking “confident steps towards corruption authoritarianism.”
- On July 15, the Pechersk Court of Kiev elected Shabunin a preventive measure in the form of a personal obligation by August 20.
- More than half a hundred NGOs responded to the case against the chairman of the Center for Combating Corruption and called on Zelensky, as well as OGP leaders Ruslan Kravchenko and DBR Alexei Sukhachev to stop using a system of justice for political massacres.
