Trump said that the actions of Colombian President Gustavo Petro endangered the national security of the United States and instructed his administration to take measures in response.

They include the imposition of 25% tariffs on all goods entering the US, which will rise to 50% in a week; the entry ban and cancellation of visas for Colombian government officials and their allies; the full imposition of extraordinary treasury, banking and financial sanctions, as well as increased border checks on Colombian citizens.

“These measures are just the beginning. We will not allow the Colombian government to violate its legal obligations to accept and return criminals they forced to come to the United States!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social social network.

Colombia’s refusal to accept planes is the second time a Latin American country has refused to accept US military deportation flights. Last week, Mexico also denied a US military plane permission to land with migrants.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro has condemned the practice of deportations, saying that migrants are treated like criminals. In his post on the social platform X, Petro said that Colombia would welcome deported migrants to their homeland on civilian planes, noting that they should be treated with dignity and respect.

Also, Brazil’s Foreign Ministry late Saturday condemned the “humiliating treatment” of Brazilians after migrants were handcuffed on a commercial deportation flight. Upon arrival, some passengers also reported being mistreated during the flight.
