Burbok, when asked by Spiegel in the context of Chancellor Scholz’s alleged blocking of an additional aid package for Ukraine, expressed the opinion that if this is not done, Ukraine “will be less able to defend itself, and therefore less able to protect us.”
She added that providing aid to Ukraine would be the best contribution to the security of Europe and Germany itself.
We will remind, before that, Spiegel unofficially learned that there was a dispute within the German government regarding an additional arms package for Ukraine in the amount of about 3 billion euros. The package was formed by Berbok and Defense Minister Boris Pistorius based on urgent requests from Ukraine.
However, Chancellor Olaf Scholz spoke against it and believes that the already planned aid is enough and that Kyiv can also spend funds from the joint loan from the G7 on weapons, and that it would be unfair to “face the facts” with the new German government, which will be formed after the early elections in February . This opinion is shared by some other members of SPD.
According to the latest details obtained by journalists, negotiations on additional weapons were allegedly constructive until Christmas, and then the chancellor changed his mind dramatically. The dispute is connected with the political considerations of the parties before the early parliamentary elections.
We will remind, at the end of December 2024, Germany handed Ukraine a large aid package with IRIS-T and Patriot.
It is also reported that in the first half of 2025, Germany is preparing to transfer substantial packages of military aid to Ukraine at the expense of funds already budgeted, which will include Leopard tanks and Marder infantry fighting vehicles.
