According to an American official familiar with the plan, the Biden administration intends to provide a variety of anti-tank weapons from American stockpiles to deter Russian forces.
As noted in the publication, among the planned deliveries: anti-tank weapons, anti-personnel mines, drones, Stinger missiles, ammunition for HIMARS systems, cluster ammunition that can be used in GMLRS missiles.
According to one of the officials, the official notification to the Congress about the arms package may arrive as early as Monday.
Reuters adds that the content and size of the package could change in the coming days before Biden’s expected signing.
The package would be the largest of the presidential arms reduction authorizations (PDA), which allow the US to use existing weapons stockpiles to assist allies in emergency situations.
In the past, such packages have typically been $125 million to $250 million, and Biden currently has access to another $4 billion to $5 billion in PDAs approved by Congress, which he is expected to use before Republican President-elect Donald Trump takes office on Jan. 20.
The publication also notes that the decision to supply the mines has caused mixed reactions, as the United States has not exported land mines for decades, and their use is controversial because of the potential harm to civilians.
Although more than 160 countries have signed a treaty banning their use, Kiev has been asking for them since Russia launched a full-scale invasion in early 2022, and Russian troops are using such mines on the front lines.
At the same time, the United States expects Ukraine to use mines on its own territory, avoiding placement in areas with a civilian population.
The publication recalls that, according to analysts, Russian forces are currently making their fastest advance on the battlefield since the invasion, capturing an area half the size of London in the past month alone.
