Biden, who is ending his term as US president while hailing US and international support for Kyiv after a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, said Russian leader Vladimir Putin had “failed to achieve any of his strategic goals”.
“Our opponents are weaker than they were when we came to this job four years ago. Just look at Russia. When Putin invaded Ukraine, he thought he would capture Kyiv in a matter of days. But the truth is that since the beginning of that war, I stood in the center of Kyiv, not him,” said the US president.
“We helped Ukraine stop Putin. And now, three years later, Putin has failed to achieve any of his strategic goals. Couldn’t destroy Ukraine, couldn’t break the unity of NATO, couldn’t grab a significant part of the territories, but there is still a lot to do, and we can’t leave,” the US president added.
During the election campaign, the newly elected US President Donald Trump claimed that he could stop the conflict in Ukraine within 24 hours after taking office. Now he says he will try to do it for six months.
Ukrainian officials are concerned that any hastily organized talks could allow Russia to hold on to Ukrainian territory it has seized, and would also give Russian forces time to rebuild and reorganize.
Trump’s proposed special representative for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, was tasked with negotiating an end to Russia’s war against Ukraine. He said potential ceasefire talks could begin when Trump takes office, and in a December Fox News interview suggested the war could be “ended within the next few months.”
Analysts of the American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) proved that the Kremlin does not want to make compromises in the war against Ukraine, but wants its complete surrender.
