Two US officials said the conversation between Biden and Netanyahu took place shortly after Israel approved a cease-fire agreement in Lebanon. The conversation lasted several minutes, and the only topic that came up other than Lebanon was an agreement to release the hostages and establish a cease-fire in Gaza.
“Now we have an opportunity. Let’s release the hostages,” Biden told Netanyahu, according to US officials, who say the prime minister responded positively and said he wanted to try.
Israeli and U.S. officials said the Lebanese cease-fire agreement increases the chances of a deal on Gaza, even if it involves only the implementation of the first phase of the proposed deal and the release of only a portion of the hostages.
A high-ranking minister of the Israeli government told the newspaper that Netanyahu is interested in achieving a partial release of the hostages, which would not oblige him to agree to the end of the war and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza.
Hamas demands that any deal must include an end to the war and the complete withdrawal of the IDF from Gaza.
Netanyahu’s critics, many of whom are families of the hostages, accuse him of undermining the deal for his own political survival.
Biden and his team have publicly blamed Hamas and accused it of obstructing a deal. But in private conversations, the president and his aides also place some of the blame on Netanyahu.
