The authorities do not reveal the names of the victims or their nationality, but reported that there are foreigners among the dead.
The causes of the accident that happened around 6:00 pm during the evening peak time are still unknown.
Eyewitnesses told the local media that the funicular broke out of the hill, apparently losing control.

Lisbon Mayor Karlush Mohedash said: “Lisbon in Mouri … This is a tragedy that has never been in our city. It’s time to act and help. I thank everyone for the reaction in minutes. The only thing I can say is a very tragic day.”
The investigation will begin after the rescue operation is completed, according to the Portugal Government.
