Ukraine has already received more than 3 million 155-mm shells from the USA.
At one point in the war, Ukraine was using 6,000 to 8,000 155mm rounds per day. That pace began to deplete American stockpiles and raised concerns that supplies would not be sufficient to meet US military needs should another major war break out, such as a potential conflict over Taiwan. In response, the US invested in restarting production lines and now produces over 40,000 155mm rounds per month, with plans to reach 100,000 rounds per month.
It is expected that Zelensky will be joined at the plant by two Pentagon officials who have contributed to the increase in production – US Assistant Secretary of Defense for Procurement, Logistics and Technology Doug Bush and the Pentagon’s chief arms buyer Bill LaPlante, as well as Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro.
Zelensky will also speak at the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York and will go to Washington for talks on Thursday with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
