“The systems immediately reported that we had lost contact. Further investigation and clarification was conducted and it was found that it was damaged,” he said.
The representative of Telia notes that the cable transmits Internet connection to Lithuania through three cables, which means that due to the incident, the bandwidth of the Internet has decreased by a third. At the same time, the connection was restored for users to bypass the malfunction.
Earlier it became known about the damage to the communication cable of the Finnish company Cinia, which runs along the bottom of the Baltic Sea and connects Finland with Germany.
The nearly 1,200 kilometer long cable is the only direct connection of its kind between Finland and Central Europe and runs alongside other important infrastructure facilities, including gas pipelines and power cables.
It will be recalled that in the autumn of 2023, the underwater pipeline from Finland to Estonia and the cable of the communication operator were damaged in the Gulf of Finland. The culprit of the problem is considered to be a Chinese vessel, which could have torn them off with an anchor that dragged along the bottom. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
