Airplane crash in South Korea: 179 people died, the authorities announced a week of mourning

In South Korea, the bodies of all the victims of the plane crash at Muan Airport were discovered. As a result of the accident, 179 people died out of 181 on board, local media reported. Previously, 151 victims were known.

Officials later confirmed that all 175 passengers and four crew members were killed in the crash.

“Of the 179 dead, 65 people have been identified,” the rescuers said.

The two surviving crew members were rescued from the tail of the plane and suffered “moderate to severe” injuries, authorities said.

South Korea announced seven days of mourning over the plane crash. Flags at government offices will be flown at half-mast and civil servants will wear black ribbons.

The accident happened on Sunday, December 29, around 9:07 a.m. local time. By evening, the bodies of 179 people were found at the scene of the tragedy. Only two people on board survived the plane crash.

A total of 181 people were on board Jeju Air flight 7C2216 – 175 passengers, 4 crew members and 2 pilots.

The accident with a Jeju Air passenger plane became the “deadliest air disaster” in South Korea.
