According to the Swiss side, the purpose of the conference, which is organized jointly with Ukraine, is to highlight the critical importance of humanitarian demining as part of the country’s social and economic recovery.
Representatives of governments, international organizations, humanitarian demining and civil society are expected to participate in the conference. Switzerland will be represented by Swiss President Viola Amgerd, who will open the conference, and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ignazio Cassis.
After the start of the full-scale invasion of Russia in February 2022, Ukraine became one of the most mined countries in the world.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine, as of July 1, 2024, more than 144,000 square kilometers of Ukraine are considered potentially mined. According to the calculations of the Ukrainian government and experts, Ukraine needs about 10,000 sappers to clear land contaminated by Russian mines in five years.
