“This is the presidency from which we all expect a lot”, – this is how Zelensky commented on the presidency of Cyprus in the Council of the EU (January 1 – June 30, 2026).
First of all, it is during the presidency of Cyprus that Ukraine hopes to see the beginning of the implementation of a financial support package for Ukraine, which “strengthens our stability, and with it – the stability of the whole of Europe.”
“We need a practical mechanism that will allow these funds to really help Ukraine. This mechanism, of course, should be designed not to create problems, but to reduce the challenges we are already facing,” said the President of Ukraine.
He said that Ukraine is “doing everything necessary from its side in the negotiation process.”
“We expect that no additional or excessive demands will be made to Ukraine,” Zelensky emphasized.
“We are grateful for what the president (Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis – “EP”) said: we should strive to open negotiation clusters simultaneously during your presidency both for Ukraine and for our friends, Moldova, and this is a strong and positive ambition,” the Ukrainian president added.
As “Europeyska Pravda” reported, the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulidis, promised that his country would make supporting Ukraine a priority during its presidency of the Council of the European Union.
On January 7, Zelenskyy held a bilateral meeting with Christodoulidis in Nicosia, during which they discussed the opening of negotiating clusters for Ukraine, sanctions against Russia, and Cyprus’s participation in Ukraine’s support programs.
It was also reported that the European Commission and the Council of the EU are working on finalizing the legal framework for providing Ukraine with a loan of 90 billion euros for the next two years.
