Zelensky Warns Against Lifting US Sanctions on Russia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has expressed concerns regarding the potential lifting of U.S. sanctions on Russia, stating that such a move would pose a significant threat to Ukraine and challenge global reputations.

In remarks made during a press conference, Zelensky emphasized that the strategy of inflicting maximum financial losses on Russia is a shared goal among civilized nations. He asserted that funds from the aggressor should not be utilized against Ukraine, particularly for the procurement of weaponry.

The President underscored that removing sanctions on Russia would not only impact Ukraine adversely but would also set a dangerous precedent worldwide.

“How can sanctions be lifted from Russia, if it is the aggressor? This means it could be done not only by them (the U.S.),” Zelensky remarked.

Addressing specifics of negotiations between Russia and the U.S., Zelensky noted that Ukraine is aware of discussions regarding the possible lifting of sanctions. However, he reassured that Ukraine has faith in the U.S. position.

“We strongly believe that the U.S. will not make such concessions,” he asserted.

U.S. Sanctions Against Russia

On October 22, the U.S. Department of the Treasury announced sanctions against Rosneft, Lukoil, and their subsidiaries, encompassing over 34 companies. This decision was made due to Russia’s lack of serious commitment to the peace process aimed at ending the war in Ukraine.

On March 6, the U.S. Treasury lifted sanctions on the German subsidiary of Rosneft, known as Rosneft Deutschland.

On March 7, it was reported that the U.S. Treasury was considering the possibility of lifting sanctions on Russian oil to address global oil shortages exacerbated by military operations against Iran in the Middle East.

Additionally, the day prior, the U.S. relaxed sanctions on Russian oil for India for a period of 30 days.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has warned that lifting U.S. sanctions on Russia would undermine Ukraine's security and set a troubling global precedent. He reaffirmed Ukraine's trust in the U.S. stance amid ongoing discussions about the sanctions.
