Zelensky Responds to Russian Claims on Nuclear Weapons Amid Ongoing Peace Talks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has dismissed recent statements from Russian officials regarding the alleged readiness of the United Kingdom and France to provide nuclear weapons to Ukraine, characterizing them as a form of “political pressure” during ongoing negotiations to end the conflict with Russia.

Speaking at a joint press conference in Kyiv with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre on February 25, Zelensky suggested that such declarations from Moscow stem from the difficulties faced by Russian forces on the battlefield. He indicated that the Russian government is resorting to threats of nuclear weaponry as a means of intimidation.

“Ukraine does not possess nuclear weapons, unfortunately. You are all aware of the circumstances under which Ukraine had such weapons and when they were relinquished, referring to the Budapest Memorandum. Therefore, I believe this is preparation on the part of Russia for trilateral meetings and a form of political pressure,” Zelensky stated.

The President emphasized the dangers of this rhetoric from the Kremlin, urging a response from other nations, particularly the United States. He expressed concern about the implications of such language, suggesting that it could escalate tensions.

“This is simply rhetoric, a response from Russia. However, I believe it is always dangerous. They are playing with these words regarding nuclear weapons. It would be beneficial for other countries, especially nuclear states like the U.S., to convey an appropriate message in response to this,” he concluded.

The situation continues to develop as diplomatic efforts persist.

Ukrainian President Zelensky has criticized Russian claims about nuclear weapons, labeling them as political pressure amid peace negotiations. He called for a response from the international community, particularly the U.S., to address the dangers of such rhetoric.
