Oleksiy Makeyev has been the ambassador of Ukraine to Germany since October 2022. His successor will be the current ambassador of Ukraine to Israel Yevhen Korniychuk.
The newspaper notes that the official reason for Makeev’s replacement is the regular rotation of diplomats. However, everything can be different behind the scenes. Makeyev’s work was systematically and publicly criticized by his predecessor Andriy Melnyk. In an interview with Tagesspiegel, Melnyk said that Makeev should “break his ass” and convince Germany to give more aid to Ukraine.
In diplomatic circles, they say that Melnyk did not hold back critics even on the sidelines. However, it remains unclear whether this influenced the decision to fire Makeev for the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiga.
According to information, Makeev will stay in Berlin until February. During his tenure as ambassador, Germany supplied Ukraine with 121 battle tanks and 140 BMPs, as well as many other weapons.
