Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly stated that Ukrainian forces will not withdraw from the Donbas region, rejecting demands from Russia to abandon approximately 200,000 Ukrainians residing there. In an interview with the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera, he emphasized the strategic importance of Donetsk, claiming it hosts Ukraine’s strongest defensive positions.
Zelensky noted that current negotiations involving Ukraine, the United States, and Russia have stalled over a proposed peace plan consisting of 20 points, particularly regarding territorial control. He remarked, “We have security guarantees from the Americans, but they want to sign them only in the context of an agreement with the Russians. I disagree with this point, but that is the situation we are in.” He also mentioned an unsigned protocol with European partners, as well as agreements concerning Ukraine’s reconstruction, which can only commence post-peace settlement.
“The Americans are considering territorial exchanges, while the Russians demand our complete withdrawal from Donbas. This exchange is not in our interests,” Zelensky stated.
He highlighted that the territory in question covers 5,800 square kilometers, asserting that it would require significant Russian resources to seize it if Ukrainian forces were to retreat.
“I chose the diplomatic path and accepted the U.S. proposal to freeze the front line. Many of us disagreed with this compromise, but I followed (President Donald Trump) to at least halt hostilities. However, the Russians refused and want our complete withdrawal from Donbas. The Americans then suggested demilitarized zones and free economic zones on both sides of the front. I insisted this should apply to both parties, but the Russians claimed it should only be on our side. This is pure madness,” he added.
When asked if Kyiv would consider withdrawing its army from Donetsk if foreign contingents could guarantee security, Zelensky pointed out that the Russian government opposes their presence.
“The Russians do not want foreign troops in Ukraine. I believe Europe should be firmer on this issue… But I want to make it clear: I will never abandon Donbas and the 200,000 Ukrainians living there. Why should I do that? Because (Vladimir) Putin imposes this as a condition for peace? And will he immediately present new demands? No, I will not tolerate that. Furthermore, our best defensive positions are located here… If we withdraw our troops, the Russians will have complete freedom of action towards the center of the country,” Zelensky concluded.
The situation continues to evolve…
Ukrainian President Zelensky has reiterated his commitment to maintaining military presence in Donbas, rejecting Russian demands for troop withdrawal. He highlighted the strategic significance of the region and the complexities surrounding ongoing peace negotiations.
