Zelensky Discusses Russian Military Losses and Peace Talks in Recent Interview

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that for every kilometer of occupied Ukrainian territory, Russian forces incur approximately 170 casualties, including dead and severely wounded soldiers. This statement was made during an interview with The Atlantic.

Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine is not losing ground and suggested that this reality may have surprised the Trump administration, which he believes has been influenced by Russian propaganda. He stated, “We have all the evidence” to support this claim and dismissed the notion that Russia has gained any significant victories in the past six months.

In his remarks, Zelensky clarified that Ukraine’s military strategy is not aimed at giving the impression to the U.S. that it wishes to prolong the conflict. He noted that simply expressing a desire for peace is insufficient, prompting Ukraine to actively support American initiatives in various formats.

“When they say, ‘Let’s meet faster!’ we respond, ‘Of course! Are you ready to freeze the line where you currently stand?’ We are ready. Are you willing to make any compromises? Only if the other side seeks compromise. Are you ready to meet with the Russians in America? It doesn’t matter to us where, except for Moscow,”

he stated.

When asked about the potential impact if Trump were to express disinterest in negotiations, Zelensky remarked that it would be detrimental. He expressed confusion over why Americans might not recognize the value of these discussions for themselves.

“We do not want Americans to abandon these negotiations. If Trump were to focus on other interests and that halted the peace process, it would be harder for us to advance it,”

he added.

Zelensky also indicated that he currently sees no willingness from Russia to end the war. However, he noted that due to Trump’s efforts to mediate, Russia is showing “greater readiness” for dialogue.

“If they do not want to end the war, it does not matter what we say—they will do everything to ensure it continues. Therefore, regardless of whether America assists in negotiations, the outcome will be the same: the Russians will find a way to avoid ending the war. It is easier for us to resolve this with U.S. support, as they can pressure the Russians. In my opinion, Trump is currently the only person capable of doing this,”

Zelensky concluded.

Meanwhile, peace talks took place in Abu Dhabi on February 4 and 5, involving representatives from Ukraine, the U.S., and Russia. The discussions lasted about five hours, with follow-up conversations continuing on February 5.

Rustem Umerov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council and head of the Ukrainian delegation, announced the start of the talks around noon and later indicated that the trilateral meeting transitioned into group discussions. He reported that over the two days of negotiations, the delegations addressed methods for implementing a ceasefire and monitoring the cessation of hostilities.

Additionally, an agreement was reached on a prisoner exchange, marking the first such exchange in five months, which occurred on February 5.

Ukrainian President Zelensky highlighted significant Russian military losses in an interview, while also discussing ongoing peace negotiations involving the U.S. and Russia. The talks, held in Abu Dhabi, focused on ceasefire methods and included a recent prisoner exchange.
