The issue of Crimea’s de-occupation is not only a “Ukrainian problem” but also a “challenge for the entire international security system”, said President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy during the opening of the fifth Crimean Platform Summit in New York.

The Ukrainian president noted that in 2014 the international community did not respond properly to the annexation of Crimea, which caused new aggression. According to him, the actions of the Russian Federation “showed other authoritarian regimes how easy to violate international law.”

He also noted that one of the results of this annexation was the persecution of Russia by the indigenous people of Crimea – Crimean Tatars.

“Ukraine is home to many peoples, especially for the indigenous people of Crimea – Crimean Tatars. It is a people who can truly feel what a home means in Crimea. But today they have become one of the main objects of repression, ”Zelensky said.

The President of Ukraine called on the world community “to prevent the normalization of Russian aggression.” He stressed that any mitigation of sanctions will mean “indulgence in new wars.”

Zelensky also stated that Ukraine “fights not only for its territories but also for international law.”

In New York, on September 24, the fifth summit of the Crimean Platform began operations, which gathered world leaders, representatives of international organizations, parliaments and expert circles.

The Crimean International Playground (Crimean Platform) is an initiative of the Ukrainian authorities to create a negotiation platform for coordinating Ukraine’s actions and international partners on the protection of the rights of the Crimeans and the de -occupation of the annexed peninsula.

At the 75th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2020, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky called on the participating countries to join the platform.

The inaugural summit from the Crimean Platform took place in Kiev on August 23, 2021-until the 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence. It was called to officially launch an international format for the de -occupation of Crimea.

43 countries – participants of the first summit of the Crimean Platform – have signed a joint declaration with a call to restore the territorial integrity of Ukraine in internationally recognized borders and stated that “Russia will not be able to legitimize the temporary occupation of Crimea and Sevastopol.”
