Yatsenko: the priority in the exchange of prisoners for Russia is conscripts and representatives of the peoples of the Caucasus

During the exchange of prisoners of war, the Russian side gives priority to conscripts and representatives of the peoples of the Caucasus, Petro Yatsenko, a representative of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, told Krym.Realia (a Radio Liberty project).

According to him, Ukraine is ready for exchanges according to the “all for all” formula.

“We see that for them (for Russia – ed.) a higher priority is Russian conscripts, representatives of the peoples of the Caucasus, whom they take away quite quickly. But those who are here cannot believe that their country, their ruler Putin has abandoned them, forgotten about them. And it’s easier for them to think that Ukraine doesn’t change them, as it were. Although, of course, we have no reason to spend taxpayers’ money, there are no taxes on them. We are ready to immediately give them all in exchange for ours. Especially since our prisoners of war and civilians are in much worse conditions. Without any access to contact with relatives, without access to visits by the International Committee of the Red Cross, without parcels, with torture and so on. These are not comparable conditions, so we are ready to give them all as soon as possible, exchange them for our Ukrainians, our compatriots,” Yatsenko explains.

From February 24, 2022 to the end of October 2024, 184 bodies of Ukrainians killed in captivity were returned to Ukraine, including 169 military personnel and 15 civilians, the Media Initiative for Human Rights (MIPL) reported with reference to the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

On October 15, Prosecutor General Andriy Kostin called the killing of Ukrainian servicemen in captivity a purposeful policy of the Russian Federation.

According to Dmytro Lubinets, the Verkhovna Rada Commissioner for Human Rights, as of November 2024, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Ukraine managed to return 3,767 Ukrainians from Russian captivity, of which only 186 were civilians.
