Xi Jinping will hold meetings with the leaders of Canada, Japan and Thailand

Chinese leader Xi Jinping plans to hold talks with the leaders of Canada, Japan, and Thailand after concluding an unstable trade truce with US President Donald Trump. Source: Reuters Details: The deal, struck just before US President Donald Trump left South Korea to skip a two-day Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit, will suspend further restrictions on rare-earth exports from China that have threatened to block global supply chains. Strengthening supply chains is a key issue at this year’s APEC talks in Gyeongju. The 21-nation economic bloc aims to encourage cooperation and reduce barriers to trade and investment, although decisions taken at the meetings are not binding and reaching consensus is increasingly difficult. “As the free trade system undergoes dramatic changes, global economic uncertainty deepens and trade and investment lose momentum,” South Korean President Lee Jae-min told leaders gathered at the summit’s opening on Friday. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent represents the US at the summit after Trump’s departure to the States. “Changes unseen in a century are accelerating around the world,” Xi said in a speech to the assembled leaders, calling for protection of the multilateral trading system and deepening economic cooperation. In Trump’s absence, the focus is on Xi, who is expected to hold the first talks with newly elected Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi. According to sources familiar with the matter, the leaders are to hold talks on Friday. Before leaving for the summit on Thursday, Takaichi told reporters that she was preparing to meet with Xi. Reuters notes that while relations between the historic rivals have become more stable in recent years, Takaichi’s surprise appointment as Japan’s first female leader could complicate relations because of her nationalist views and tough security policies. Verbatim from the publication: “One of the first steps after taking office last week was to accelerate a military build-up aimed at containing the territorial ambitions of China, which is becoming increasingly aggressive in East Asia. Japan is also the country with the largest concentration of US military forces overseas. Detention of Japanese citizens in China and Beijing’s restrictions on imports of Japanese beef, seafood and agricultural products are also likely to be among sensitive issues on the agenda”. Details: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will meet with Xi at 4:00 p.m. local time, his official office said, with the aim of resuming broad cooperation with China after years of strained relations. Verbatim from the publication: “Engaged in a bitter trade war with its largest trading partner, the United States, Canada is eager to shed this overdependence and is seeking new markets. China is Canada’s second largest trading partner.” Details: In August, China announced preliminary anti-dumping duties on Canadian canola imports, a year after Canada said it would impose 100% tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports. Senior officials from both sides met earlier this month to discuss the issues, but showed no sign of an end to the crisis. Thai Prime Minister Anuthin Charnvirakul is also due to meet Xi in the afternoon, Bangkok said, after he signed an agreement on Sunday to strengthen a ceasefire with neighboring Cambodia in the presence of Trump.”, — write: www.pravda.com.ua
