Anton Protsyuk, one of Wikipedia’s administrators, told NV in an interview about the potential competition of the popular encyclopedia with artificial intelligence.
Large language models, in particular ChatGPT, will not be able to completely replace Wikipedia, Anton Protsyuk, ambassador of the Ukrainian-speaking segment of the platform and one of its administrators, is confident.
One of the reasons that the free encyclopedia will not disappear with the development of chatbots is the so-called hallucinations, when virtual assistants with generative AI make up some information during their answers. Protsyuk emphasizes that this is a problem that will be difficult for developers to overcome.
“So if I want to read more reliable information,” he told NV, “I’m still better off going to Wikipedia than asking on ChatGPT.”
The creators of ChatGPT are preparing revolutionary projects Strawberry and Orion. What is known about them?
Another aspect worth paying attention to is that large language models have something to train on. And Wikipedia texts are an important source of data for them, adds Protsyuk.
“Accordingly, if there is no Wikipedia, it will be much more difficult for these services, – believes the administrator of the national encyclopedia. “Therefore, I think these services do not pose an existential threat to Wikipedia.”
At the same time, there are risks that language models may still make Wikipedia less popular among users.
“We haven’t seen it yet, but it needs to be recognized, – summarizes NV’s interlocutor. “It could potentially happen.”
