“We have agreed on the extension of gas supplies for another three months, until March 31, so that people can be sure and sleep peacefully,” he said.

Belgrade expected to sign a new long-term gas supply contract as early as May this year.

He also said that Gazprom representatives are discussing the sale of a stake in Naftna Industrija Srbije (NIS), which is under US sanctions, with, among others, the Hungarian national company MOL.

Vucic emphasized that the Serbian leadership has no objections to this.

“Hungarians are our friends. We just have to finish as soon as possible, by January 15,” the Serbian president added.

NIS, Serbia’s largest oil company, has been under US sanctions since early October after several delays.

United States insist for Russian companies to give up their stake in NIS, which currently stands at 56.2%. Due to the sanctions, the NIS refinery in the city of Pancevo, near Belgrade, was closed.

Against this background, the government of Serbia is already is considering the possibility abandon NIS as the main oil supplier if the situation does not change.

Meanwhile, the Hungarian oil and gas company MOL will increase supplies crude oil and fuel to Serbia.
