Details: Volker believes that the US should provide a stable supply of weapons to Ukraine, even on a paid basis, without additional burden on US taxpayers. This, he said, the key role can be played by US President Donald Trump.
Volker stressed that it is important to strengthen Ukrainian defense capability as soon as possible, as Russia is trying to regroup and strengthen its position.
“No one is going to attack Russia or capture Moscow, but we must be ready for a long tense confrontation for the occupied territory of Ukraine,” he said.
Speaking of a new sanction package that is considering the US Senate, Volker criticized the previous approaches of US Expatient Administration Joe Biden.
“During the first three years of the war, sanctions had exceptions – in particular for payments to Russian banks for energy. This allowed Putin not to feel serious economic pressure,” Volker said.
He added that the new package has important changes – it retains basic sanctions, imposes restrictions on the “shadow fleet”, abolishes exceptions and imposes punishment for those who help Russia bypass sanctions.
“It is a serious restraining mechanism. If you combine it with the policy of keeping low world oil prices, it can be seriously hit by Putin’s budget,” Volker is convinced.
The publication reminds that the Senator-Republican Lindsey Graham, his colleague-democrat Richard Blumental and another 80 co-authors, have submitted a bill that will provide additional economic sanctions against Russia for abandoning a truce, including the introduction of a 500-percent duty on goods that are imported from countries.
The project also has support in the House of Representatives.
However, according to the media, Trump wants to mitigate sanctional measures in the bill. Publicly, Trump says he will impose new sanctions against Russia “as needed.”
