Details: The oil tanker, formerly known as Bella 1, refused to be boarded by US services last month and later switched to Russian registration as Marinera in late December to gain Russian protection.

“They, in fact, tried to pass themselves off as a Russian oil tanker to avoid sanctions,” he added.
The Marinera tanker had no oil on board, but the US says it belongs to a “shadow fleet” of vessels used to transport sanctioned oil from Venezuela.

- On January 7, the American military took control of two tankers, including the Russian-flagged vessel Bella 1which they pursued for more than two weeks. The vessels are accused of violating the sanctions policy.
- Moscow called on the US to release the crew and behave humanely with the citizens of the Russian Federation who were on board.
