Details: On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump announced the creation of a “framework” for an agreement on Greenland after talks with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Davos.
He disclosed only a few details of the deal, noting that it would include access to mining rights for the US and its European allies, as well as cooperation on the Golden Shield missile defense system.
According to him, it is the military power of the United States, not Denmark, that deters foreign aggression in the Arctic region, which includes Greenland.
“What is stopping Russia or China from invading Greenland? The power of Denmark? No matter how much I love Denmark, no. It is the power of the United States of America,” the US vice president is convinced.
Vance said that control over the Arctic is critical to US missile defense and national security.
“If you ask yourself what will happen if, God forbid, some foreign country launches an intercontinental ballistic missile at the United States of America, our entire missile defense system can be destabilized if you don’t control the Arctic,” he added.
Vance dismissed criticism from European leaders as political posturing, saying their public disagreement did not reflect private conversations.
“They definitely say no in public, but do they really say no in private? Absolutely not,” Vance said.
According to him, the Trump administration’s approach is based on realism, not hostility to Europe.
“In fact, we love Europe. We love Europe so much that we are actually asking them to do what their own leadership refuses to do, which is to take care of themselves and act more intelligently,” Vance emphasized.
We will remind: Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen outlined the “red lines” of the agreement with the US regarding Greenland: the status of a sovereign state is not discussed.
