Utah Author Convicted of Murdering Husband with Fentanyl

A 35-year-old author from Utah has been found guilty of murdering her husband, a father of three, by poisoning him with a lethal dose of fentanyl. The case has drawn significant attention due to the circumstances surrounding the crime and the author’s subsequent actions.

The jury determined that Kuri Richins administered the drug to her husband, Eric Richins, in March 2022, mixing it into a drink. The amount of fentanyl used was reportedly five times the lethal dose. Richins initially claimed she had prepared a cocktail for her husband before going to tend to one of their children who was experiencing night terrors.

Following Eric’s death, Kuri published a children’s book titled “Are You With Me?” intended to help children cope with the loss of a loved one, including her own children. However, just two months after the book’s release, she was arrested.

Investigators revealed that Richins had accumulated significant debt, amounting to millions of dollars, and had taken out a life insurance policy on her husband. Furthermore, evidence emerged indicating she was involved in a romantic relationship with another individual, suggesting she was planning to start a new life.

“She wanted to divorce Eric Richins but did not want to lose his money,” said prosecutor Brad Bladworth during the trial.

Prosecutors called over 40 witnesses, including a woman who testified that she sold the drugs used in the murder. The case has raised questions about motives and the lengths to which individuals might go in dire financial circumstances.
