Details: On Thursday, January 6, Rubio informed that he would not go to the meeting of G20 in Johannesburg.
“South Africa does very bad things,” he said.
Among the “bad things” Rubio highlighted:
- expropriation of private property;
- Use G20 to promote “solidarity, equality and stability” (Dei).
“My work is to promote America’s national interests, not to spend taxpayers or to cherish anti -Americanism,” the US Secretary of State summed up.
G20 includes Argentina, Australia, United Kingdom, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey and the United States. Two regional organizations – the European Union and the African Union – are also members.
On January 3, Trump stated that South Africa was engaged in the “confiscation of” land and “badly treat certain classes of people.” In this regard, he announced that it stopped all further financial assistance to this country until the investigation is completed.
According to the latest US Government, in 2023, the total volume of American assistance in South Africa was about $ 440 million.
President Syril Ramafos, the acting head of the G20, said earlier that Trump had congratulated the elections and expressed his hope for continuing cooperation with the United States.
Recall that in November, German Chancellor Olaf Scholtz expressed indignation by the fact that in the final declaration of the G20 summit was not clearly formulated on the responsibility of the Russian Federation for solving the war against Ukraine.
