Details: Rubio stressed that achieving peace is a priority for President Donald Trump’s administration, but that the process will be difficult and require significant concessions from both sides.

Direct speech: “We want the war to end. That’s understandable. You’ve seen what the president has said, he wants to be a president who promotes peace and ends conflict, and that’s going to be difficult, too. These are difficult things. I don’t want to, and I can’t put a timeline framework, except that whenever you try to end a conflict between two sides, neither of which can achieve their maximum goals, each side will have to make some concessions.”

Details: At the same time, the state secretary refrained from giving specifics about what exactly Ukraine should give up. He emphasized that the key to success lies in diplomacy:

Direct speech: “We will not rush ahead, talking about the details. Negotiations of this level should be conducted through diplomacy, and not in public forums. And it is obvious that the final decisions on what to agree to will be made by the participating countries themselves – both Ukrainians and Russians”.

Details: When asked about the terms of the cease-fire, he answered: “This will be the main priority of the president, so actions will begin almost immediately. The basis for negotiations is already being created, but it will be a difficult process.”

Rubio emphasized that Russia is the aggressor in this war and insisted on the need to end it.

“Russia is the aggressor in this conflict, but this war must end. After all, this is the complexity of foreign policy,” he said.ʼ

Prehistory:

  • American podcaster Lex Friedman, who recently interviewed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, believes that the latter has not shown a desire to enter into peace talks with Russia.
  • French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine will not end “tomorrow or the day after tomorrow”, despite US President Donald Trump’s promise to end it quickly.
  • Trump’s team has recently acknowledged that the task is much more difficult and could take months to complete.
  • During the election campaign, Trump liked to boast about promises that he would be able to conclude a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine in 24 hours. Now he admitted it was more complicated than he let on.
