The permission that Ukraine received from the US President Joe Biden’s administration for the limited use of conventional American long-range weapons for legitimate military purposes on the territory of the Russian Federation does not mean a threat of nuclear war.
This is how the main European diplomat answered the question of journalists whether the American permission means an increase in the risk of nuclear war.
“I don’t see the connection between the decision that was made by President Biden and a hypothetical nuclear war. As I said, it is irresponsible to say and use threats with nuclear weapons. What President Biden has allowed to do is to use weapons on Russian territory, at a distance up to 300 kilometers from the Russian border – which is quite limited, by the way – and use conventional means of destruction. It seems that today the Russians reported that this authorization was used, and the first consequences of this American decision have taken place,” Borrell said.

“This is a national competence. Each state decides what it wants to do (with the weapons provided to Ukraine – ed.) But the US sent a signal, an important signal, that they give such permission for use, for a limited range of 300 kilometers. It is not very deep in Russian territory, but it is probably the first step to give the Ukrainians the opportunity not only to knock down arrows, but also to hit the archer,” said the high representative of the EU.

“I have always supported such a request. Because it corresponds to the rule of law, international law. Ukraine must be able to respond to Russian attacks, even if these attacks are carried out from Russian territory,” Borrell added.
As already reported, a meeting of EU defense ministers took place today in Brussels, the main issue of which was the continuation of assistance to Ukraine in its fight against a full-scale Russian invasion. The Minister of Defense of Ukraine Rustem Umyerov took part in the work of this EU Council of Ministers via teleconference.
