The US Customs Border Service retains jurisdiction over illegal border crossings in the area, and troops will transfer detained migrants to the US border patrol or other civil law enforcement.
According to the New Mexico Prosecutor’s Office, 82 migrants were charged for crossing the border of the New Mexico military zone. The US troops did not detain any of them, they were engaged in border and customs officers.
