It “is the result of the declared dissolution of HTS and the obligation of the Syrian government to fight terrorism in all its forms,” the US Secretary of State added.
“The abolition of the status of a foreign terrorist organization is an important step on the path to the vision of President Trump on stable, united and peaceful Syria,” Rubio emphasized.
Hayat Tahrir Ash-Shaam, led by Ahmed Al-Sharaa, led the uprising against Assad in December 2024, and after his escape to Russia, control over the country. Al-Sharaa is now a transitional President of Syria.
HTS has emerged as a Syrian branch of Al-Qaeda and therefore came under UN sanctions, USA and a number of other countries as a terrorist organization. But since 2016, it has declared a break with Al-Qaida.
