At the meeting of health ministers of the EU countries, which will take place on Tuesday, they will consider a recommendation on the introduction of strict restrictions on the use of tobacco products and electronic cigarettes in many open areas, in particular in parks, on beaches and cafe terraces.
Despite the fact that this recommendation will not be binding, it reflects the growing desire of EU countries to reduce the number of smokers and protect the health of citizens from passive smoking. Such measures are expected to help achieve the EU’s ambitious goal of reducing the proportion of the population who smoke to 5% by 2040.
The document pays special attention to electronic cigarettes, which are growing in popularity among young people. Research shows that the aerosols released during vaping contain toxic substances that are harmful both to the smokers themselves and to others.
However, not all EU countries are enthusiastic about a complete ban on outdoor vaping. Italy and Romania, for example, believe that such measures do not have sufficient scientific justification and may limit personal freedom. Despite this, both countries are expected to support the joint document.
