UNICEF OVER: Every fifth child in Ukraine indicated that had lost a close relative or friend since the beginning

Every fifth child in Ukraine – 21% – indicated that she lost a close relative or friend since the beginning of full -scale aggression of the Russian Federation three years ago – such results were published by UNICEF.

It is noted that the survey conducted in 2023 made it possible to find out what circumstances related to war, combat actions could be a source of stress and experience in adolescents. A significant proportion of respondents indicated that: their family has experienced economic difficulties – 63%; their close relative or friend participated in hostilities – 59%; – they personally heard or saw fighting 55%; their close relative or friend was injured (35%); They personally saw people who were injured or killed –31%.

According to the organization, the war caused a mass temporary relocation of almost half of those surveyed to other cities, oblasts and abroad.
Fighting, forced migration led to a change in forms of study. More than a third (37%) of respondents study online (mainly teenagers, as they live in other regions of the country), 30.1% are offline, and 28.5% combine online and offline training. More than a third of the respondents who reside abroad are studying at the school abroad and at the same time at the Ukrainian School.

In its conclusions, the UN Children’s Fund notes that by 2022, the vast majority of teenagers felt happy. The war caused a deterioration of the psychological well -being of Ukrainians, including children. As the report is summarized, among the interviewed young people significantly decreased the proportion of those who feel happy as a whole-to recognize themselves as a happy person hinder, first, the stress and their own experiences associated with war, and secondly, unfavorable social atmosphere, experience others.

The 2022/2023 survey, which was supported by UNICEF in Ukraine, covered 23 612 adolescents aged 11-17. The survey included 24 regions and Kyiv. The study studies mental health, school experience, risky behavior, nutrition, physical activity and social support, and evaluates the impact of Covid-19 and war in Ukraine on young people.
