The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) has confirmed the detention of an employee from the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU) at a checkpoint in Sumy. This action was taken in accordance with established protocols due to the individual exhibiting several suspicious characteristics.
According to the SBU, the incident occurred as part of ongoing counterintelligence efforts in regions near the front lines, particularly in light of the ongoing conflict. The detained individual, a Ukrainian citizen from temporarily occupied territories, reportedly failed to provide adequate identification and had connections to Russian phone numbers.
“In conditions of full-scale invasion, SBU employees are continuously ensuring counterintelligence measures at checkpoints in frontline areas. Today, at one of the checkpoints entering the city of Sumy, a citizen of Ukraine was identified with several signs that warranted further verification,” the SBU stated.
The SBU emphasized that its actions were aligned with current legislation and adhered to all protocols designed to ensure the safety of Ukrainian citizens and military personnel operating in the Sumy region. They reiterated that any manipulations regarding this matter are unacceptable.
The NABU had previously claimed that the detention of their employee was unwarranted. They reported the incident on Sunday evening, expressing concerns over the legality of the actions taken by the SBU at the checkpoint.
As of now, it remains unclear whether the detained NABU employee has been released. The situation underscores the ongoing tensions and complexities in the region as security agencies navigate their roles amid heightened threats.
