Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky held a meeting with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew in Istanbul, during which he extended an invitation for the Patriarch to visit Ukraine. This visit is intended to provide spiritual support to Ukrainians as the country approaches the 35th anniversary of its independence.
Zelensky shared details of the meeting via Telegram, emphasizing the plight of Ukrainian children affected by Russian aggression. He expressed gratitude for the Patriarch’s ongoing prayers and support for Ukraine and its citizens.
“The key topic of discussion was the fate of Ukrainian children and what they have to endure due to Russian aggression. I thank His All-Holiness for the support and constant prayers for Ukraine, Ukrainians, and our children,”
the President stated. He also briefed the Patriarch on the ongoing negotiations aimed at achieving a just peace and discussed the development of the church in Ukraine.
Earlier, on April 4, Zelensky announced his arrival in Istanbul, where he had planned significant meetings. Among these was a discussion with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, during which the leaders agreed on new steps for security cooperation and explored practical measures for joint projects related to gas infrastructure and the potential joint development of gas fields.
