The European Union should lead the process of seizing frozen Russian assets for their recovery and bringing those responsible for the war to justice.

This was stated by members of the Verkhovna Rada during a meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, Ukrinform correspondent reports.

“Currently, about 210 billion euros of Russian assets are frozen in the EU. We call on the European Union to lead the process of seizing these assets and ensure they are used to rebuild Ukraine and bring those responsible for our suffering to justice. It is about justice and ensuring that the aggressor pays for the destruction he caused,” said Oleksandr Merezhko, head of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Interparliamentary Cooperation.

According to him, the budget deficit of Ukraine for 2025 will reach 38 billion euros. In this regard, the G7 commitment to provide Ukraine with a US$50 billion loan with disbursements beginning in December 2024 is critical financial support, but the scale of the challenge calls for more.

In her opinion, the frozen Russian funds should be used as a loan to Ukraine for the purchase of weapons.

“We know that Ukraine needs much more military aid and much more money to be able to buy or produce the necessary weapons. And we have the opportunity to provide Ukraine with a loan for the amount of these frozen assets, in the amount of 300 billion dollars,” Loiseau said.

In her opinion, during an aggressive war waged by Russia, such countermeasures are completely legal.

“We were told that financially it could be a threat to the Eurozone, but if we don’t confiscate assets and give Ukraine a loan, I think it’s quite possible,” she added.

As reported by Ukrinform, Ukraine will receive 22 billion dollars next year due to revenues from the frozen assets of the Russian Federation.
