Ukrainian and American writer and translator passed away at the age of 91 Yuriy Tarnavskyi. He was one of the founders of the New York group of Ukrainian avant-garde writers.

About the death of the writer reported Maryana Savka.

“This morning we learned that on October 14, Yuriy Tarnavskyi passed away. We were very much looking forward to his return to the Land of Poets, his address to us from the screen. But the Poet’s life time reached its last division faster. Poets never die. They just go.” Savka wrote.

The publisher added that at the end of October, Stary Lev Publishing House will publish “powerful tome” of selected poetry of Yuriy Tarnavskyi.

“It is a great pity that he will not see it, but he knew, he worked on it, he agreed to everything and waited”– the writer and poet added.

Yuriy Tarnavskyi was born on February 3, 1934 in the Ukrainian city of Turka. However, he studied in the USA. The writer was educated as an engineer and a linguist.

He worked at IBM as a cybernetician specializing in natural language processing, and later as a professor of Ukrainian literature and culture at Columbia University.

Tarnavskyi is a co-founder of the group of Ukrainian avant-garde writers New York Group and the association of innovative American writers Fiction Collective/FC2.

In 2008, Yuriy was awarded the Order of Yaroslav the Wise for services to Ukrainian literature.

Yurii Tarnavskyi is the author of more than twenty books of poetry, prose, drama, and essays in Ukrainian and English.

Among his books in Ukrainian are two volumes of collected poetry “Poems about nothing and other poems on the same topicin” and “They don’t exist”. Among English speakers – “Meningitis”, “Three blondes and death”, “Like blood in water”and “Short tails”.

After retiring in 1996, the author lived and worked in White Plains, New York.
