Ukraine’s Interior Minister, Ihor Klymenko, announced the establishment of new military units within the National Guard on March 10. This initiative includes the formation of two drone regiments, two assault regiments, and a separate airspace protection regiment.
Klymenko emphasized that many units of the Ministry of Internal Affairs are actively engaged in combat operations at the front. The ongoing analysis of their deployment and combat strategies aims to enhance operational effectiveness. He noted that previous reforms within the defense forces have already shown positive results in combat operations.
General Oleksandr Pivnenko, Commander of the National Guard, highlighted that the primary objective of these new units is to improve the effectiveness of the forces, expand the use of advanced technologies, and ensure robust countermeasures against aerial attacks. This restructuring is designed to provide essential resources that can be quickly deployed to critical areas for reconnaissance and fire support.
Over the past year, the National Guard has transitioned to a corps system, forming the 1st Corps “Azov” and the 2nd Corps “Charter,” which integrate brigades and support units under unified command. The spokesperson for the National Guard, Colonel Ruslan Muzychuk, explained that efforts are ongoing to ensure corps commanders have the necessary units and resources to reinforce the most threatened sectors.
This strategic approach has proven beneficial during recent offensive operations in the Dobropillia and Kupiansk regions in 2025. Muzychuk stated that having immediate access to resources allows commanders to respond swiftly to threats, potentially preventing enemy breakthroughs while awaiting additional reinforcements.
He further noted that the establishment of an airspace protection regiment is crucial given the significant aerial advantage held by enemy forces. The increase in the use of aerial bombs and attack drones by the adversary has been substantial, impacting both front-line engagements and rear cities.
