Ukraine’s Efforts in Prisoner Exchanges: Over 8,000 Individuals Returned from Russian Captivity

In a significant development, Ukrainian officials announced that over 8,000 individuals, including both military personnel and civilians, have been successfully returned from Russian captivity in the past four years. This information was shared by Andrii Yusov, a representative from Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR), during a conference marking the fourth anniversary of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War.

Yusov highlighted that the primary achievements of the initiative include the rescue of lives through more than 70 exchanges, along with numerous special operations aimed at securing the release of Ukrainian soldiers and civilian hostages. He noted that these efforts involved hundreds of meetings, discussions, and communications with the families of those captured.

A key function of the Coordination Headquarters is to engage with the public, particularly the relatives of military personnel held by Russian forces. Yusov emphasized the importance of supporting these families, providing them with assistance, clarifying their rights, and offering legal guidance. Furthermore, post-isolation support is also a critical component of their work.

On March 5, a prisoner exchange took place between Ukraine and Russia, resulting in the return of 200 individuals, which included soldiers from the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Special Transport Service, border guards, and National Guard members. The following day, March 6, an additional 300 Ukrainian military personnel and two civilians were returned from captivity.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defense, during the exchange on March 6, Ukraine transferred 300 captured Russian soldiers. These individuals are currently in Belarus before being transported to Russia.

Ukraine has successfully facilitated the return of over 8,000 individuals from Russian captivity in recent years, with ongoing efforts to support families of those captured. Recent exchanges highlight the complexities and humanitarian dimensions of this ongoing conflict.
