Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has disclosed that approximately 80% of the country lacks air defense systems capable of countering ballistic threats. In an interview with Tagesschau, he emphasized that his previous comments about air defense during the Munich Security Conference were not intended as criticism of international partners but rather aimed at raising awareness of Ukraine’s precarious situation.
“I will not disclose the locations of our Patriot systems, but it is crucial to note that 80% of our territory is unprotected against ballistic missiles,” Zelenskyy stated. He underscored the urgent need for funding to enhance air defense capabilities, regardless of whether partner nations provide additional systems.
During the interview, Zelenskyy mentioned that he has been actively negotiating with various countries, including Germany, Norway, and Canada, to secure the necessary resources. He highlighted the significant costs associated with these defense systems, which can exceed one billion dollars each. “These systems range from $1.5 billion to $2 billion, and each missile costs between $2 million and $3 million,” he explained.
Ukraine currently employs a multi-layered air defense strategy that incorporates fighter jets, mobile fire groups, intercepting drones, and Patriot systems to protect urban areas from missile attacks and drone incursions. The Patriot system is the only one in the Ukrainian arsenal capable of intercepting ballistic missiles, but its effectiveness is contingent on the availability of PAC-3 missiles from allies, especially as Russia intensifies its strikes.
On February 12, Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov reiterated the critical need for ballistic interception capabilities, identifying PAC-3 missiles as the most effective solution. The ongoing conflict has underscored the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s defenses as it faces increasing aerial threats.
President Zelenskyy has revealed that a significant portion of Ukraine lacks air defense systems against ballistic missiles, stressing the need for international support and funding. As the conflict escalates, the urgency for advanced defense capabilities becomes more pronounced.
