Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently led a delegation to Damascus, where he participated in triangular discussions involving Turkey and Syria. This meeting took place on April 5, 2026, marking a significant diplomatic effort in the region.
During his visit, Zelensky emphasized the importance of the talks, stating,
“Today was an important day for negotiations in Damascus. We had both bilateral discussions with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa and a triangular conversation involving Ukraine, Syria, and Turkey. We are building new relations and expanding our collaboration for security purposes.”
The discussions primarily focused on security and defense issues, as well as the regional implications of ongoing events related to Iran. Additionally, the leaders explored opportunities for energy and infrastructure cooperation among the three nations.
Zelensky further noted,
“We will continue our efforts regarding food security. We discussed in detail how to address the consequences of the war and the negotiation process concerning Russia’s aggression against our state and people.”
This visit marked Zelensky’s first official trip to Syria, where he had a series of planned meetings. Accompanying him was Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, who joined the discussions in Damascus.
Prior to this, on April 4, Zelensky visited Turkey, where he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The two leaders agreed on new initiatives to enhance security cooperation between Kyiv and Ankara.
