On November 20-24, the exhibition-fair Buch Wien took place in Vienna – the largest book and literary event in Austria.
“At this year’s fair, books from the following Ukrainian publishing houses were presented at the joint stand: “Stary Lev Publishing House”, “Chas Maistriv”, “Tempora”, “Squirrel”, “Folio”, “Publishing House”. In addition, “Ranok” publishing house ” presented children’s literature at a separate stand. And such a return of Ukraine to Buch Wien after breaks of 2019-2023 is an important event both for the Ukrainian diaspora in Austria and for the domestic book market,” said the curator of the LiterAktiv Ukrainian literary club in Vienna, the head of the Media Center of the Ukrainian Community, Hanna Hnedkova.

She represented the united Ukrainian stand, and also moderated a number of literary events. In particular, she acted as moderator of the event, at which representatives of Ukrainian publishing houses spoke about the fact that their printing houses are constantly under Russian fire.
“A recent example is Faktor Druk: on May 23, 2024, shortly before the Book Arsenal, a Russian missile hit this printing house in Kharkiv, where novelties were being prepared for the book festival. Seven employees of the printing house were killed, 22 were injured. The books were burned or damaged. But despite all the risks, new bookstores are opening in Ukraine and new publishing houses are being founded, because it is Ukrainian literature is also fighting for survival. And it needs more active support from foreign partners and the Ukrainian diaspora,” Hnedkova said.

As part of the fair, a number of events related to the war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine took place, discussions were held with the participation of leading domestic authors: Andriy Kurkov, Tetyana Malyarchuk, Sofia Andruhovych, Natalka Snyadanko, Iryna Tsylyk and others.
The stand of Ukraine was visited by the Federal Minister of European and International Affairs of the Republic of Austria, Alexander Schallenberg, and the Ambassador of Ukraine, Vasyl Khymynets.

This year, the fair was visited by a record number of book lovers – 65 thousand.
As reported by Ukrinform, the 76th Frankfurter Buchmesse book fair was held in Frankfurt, Germany, on October 16-20, with the participation of Ukraine.
