Ukraine submitted a draft law on the language of education to Hungary and is waiting for a response – Duck

Taras Kachka, the Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, announced on Thursday that Ukraine has submitted a draft law on education to Hungary, which partially takes into account Budapest’s requirements regarding the language issue, and expects to receive a response soon.

Details: According to Káchka, the draft law on language legislation, which was handed over to Hungary, takes into account “5 out of 11 proposed requirements”. He did not specify exactly what requirements the document refers to.

“If it suits them, we will even submit it to the Council. We expect feedback in the coming days,” said the Deputy Prime Minister.

He added that in two-thirds of the approximately 100 Hungarian schools in Ukraine, the language of instruction is Hungarian with a few subjects in Ukrainian, and in the rest, the language of instruction is Ukrainian, and several key subjects are taught in Hungarian.

“Today, de facto, we fully cover the request of the Hungarian community for education that satisfies their interests. What the Hungarian government is asking for is specific,” Kachka said.

What happened before:

• In September, after a meeting with the head of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Peter Sijarto, Káchka said that Ukraine has a solution to all 11 demands of the Hungarian side regarding the language of education. These requirements can be read in more detail in the “EvroPravda” article.
• The language issue and the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine are among the most controversial between Kyiv and Budapest.
