Ukraine Reports Significant Russian Military Losses Amid Ongoing Conflict

As of April 12, 2023, the Ukrainian General Staff reported that Russia has lost approximately 1,311,180 military personnel since the onset of its full-scale invasion. This figure includes 1,070 soldiers lost in just the past day.

In addition to personnel losses, Ukrainian officials provided updated statistics on Russian military equipment losses, detailing the following:

  • Tanks: 11,859 (an increase of 8)
  • Armored fighting vehicles: 24,384 (up by 3)
  • Artillery systems: 39,871 (an increase of 73)
  • Multiple launch rocket systems: 1,727 (up by 1)
  • Air defense systems: 1,345 (an increase of 1)
  • Aircraft: 435
  • Helicopters: 350
  • Tactical drones: 233,866 (an increase of 2,081)
  • Missiles: 4,517
  • Naval vessels: 33
  • Submarines: 2
  • Vehicles and fuel tankers: 88,914 (up by 216)
  • Specialized equipment: 4,121

Russia has not officially disclosed its military losses, with the last reported figure of 5,937 fatalities coming in September 2022.

Meanwhile, investigative journalists from the Russian outlet Mediazona, along with the BBC’s Russian service and volunteer teams, have identified the names of 204,626 Russian soldiers killed in the conflict since February 2022. They caution that this list is incomplete, as not all casualty information is publicly available.

International organizations and intelligence agencies estimate that the total Russian losses, including both killed and wounded, are significantly higher. A NATO official, speaking anonymously in December 2025, suggested that the number of Russian casualties could approach 1.15 million.

Ukrainian authorities have also been reticent about disclosing their own losses. President Volodymyr Zelensky has periodically shared casualty figures, stating in an interview with France 2 in early February 2026 that Ukraine has lost 55,000 soldiers since the war began, with many more considered missing.

Additionally, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, noted on January 13, 2023, that efforts in 2025 had led to a 13% reduction in personnel losses, although he did not provide specific numbers regarding Ukrainian casualties.

The Ukrainian General Staff has reported staggering Russian military losses, estimating over 1.3 million personnel since the invasion began. In addition to personnel, significant losses in military equipment have also been documented, while both sides continue to grapple with casualty reporting.
