Ukraine Offers Expertise to Gulf States Against Iranian Drones

Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, announced that Ukraine is providing expertise to Gulf countries to counter Iranian drones. Concurrently, Ukraine is in discussions regarding future access to interceptor missiles for its air defense systems.

Stefanishyna made these remarks during the Brave1 Ukrainian Defense Tech USA Roadshow on March 9, as reported by Suspilne’s correspondent. She emphasized the importance of demonstrating Ukraine’s ability to take immediate action rather than merely expressing political positions or concerns.

“For Ukraine, it was really important to show that we can offer not a political position, concerns, or sympathy, but immediate actions and immediate effects,” said Stefanishyna.

According to her, President Volodymyr Zelensky has held phone conversations with leaders of Gulf nations affected by Iranian strikes. Following these discussions, Ukraine provided expertise at their request, with similar arrangements made with the U.S. government.

Stefanishyna pointed out that Iranian drones, specifically the Shahed model, have been used as a strategic tool of aggression since December 2022. She stated that these drones were intentionally developed and supplied to Russia for attacks on urban areas, aiming to kill civilians rather than for frontline use. This same technology was reportedly utilized during an Israeli-American operation in Iran.

In addition to assisting Gulf countries, Ukraine is also negotiating future access to air defense missiles. While she noted that these matters are not directly interconnected, the prolonged nature of the conflict and its expanding geography will likely increase the demand for interceptors. Ukraine is coordinating efforts with European allies to ensure a steady supply.

Stefanishyna urged that the roles of Russia and China in supporting Iran should not be overlooked. She stated that the outcome of American engagement in the region should not be undermined by any party, emphasizing that this is a matter that should not be ignored.

Previously, Zelensky indicated that Ukraine is considering providing expertise on downing Shahed-type drones to Middle Eastern nations. On March 5, he confirmed that Kyiv received a request from Washington for assistance against Iranian kamikaze drones in the Gulf region. He instructed that necessary resources be provided and that Ukrainian specialists be present.

On March 8, Zelensky announced that the first group of military experts from Ukraine is set to arrive in the Middle East.

Ukraine is actively supporting Gulf states in countering Iranian drone threats while seeking enhanced air defense capabilities. This initiative reflects Ukraine's strategic partnerships and the ongoing geopolitical tensions in the region.
