In a significant development, President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the return of 200 Ukrainian citizens, including soldiers from various military branches, who had been held captive by Russia. This event marks a notable moment for the families of these individuals and the nation as a whole.
The released personnel include defenders from key conflict areas such as Mariupol, Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia. Among them are members of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the State Special Transport Service, border guards, and National Guard troops.
Kyrylo Budanov, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, noted that this return is part of the first stage of a prisoner exchange agreement reached during negotiations in Geneva. He expressed gratitude to former U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration for their support in facilitating this exchange.
Budanov emphasized that the release of Ukrainian prisoners is a top priority for the negotiation team, and efforts will continue to bring all captured individuals home.
The Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War confirmed that the returning soldiers include representatives from various military divisions, such as the Navy, Ground Forces, Territorial Defense, and Air Forces, as well as the National Guard and State Border Service.
Among those freed are defenders of Mariupol, some of whom had been in captivity for nearly four years. The released soldiers had been active in protecting the country in multiple regions, including Donetsk, Luhansk, Kharkiv, and Zaporizhzhia. The group consists of both enlisted personnel and officers.
Upon their return, the soldiers will undergo comprehensive medical examinations and receive assistance for physical and psychological rehabilitation, along with all state-provided benefits.
On February 20, President Zelensky indicated that another prisoner exchange between Ukraine and Russia could occur in the near future. The last exchange took place on February 5, when 157 Ukrainians, including military personnel and civilians, were returned home, with an equal number transferred to Russian custody.
The return of 200 Ukrainian soldiers from Russian captivity marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to secure the release of prisoners. This event highlights the complexities of negotiations and the importance of international support in facilitating such exchanges.
