Ukraine Faces Ongoing Power Outages Amid Energy Infrastructure Strain

On February 23, Ukraine is experiencing scheduled power outages and capacity restrictions across most regions, as reported by the national energy company, Ukrenergo. Emergency power cuts have been implemented in certain areas due to ongoing challenges with the energy infrastructure.

As a result of recent Russian attacks targeting energy facilities, consumers in Odesa, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and Sumy regions are currently without electricity. Restoration efforts are underway wherever security conditions permit.

Efforts to repair distribution networks are also ongoing following previous large-scale assaults on energy infrastructure, particularly in Odesa. The company noted that in many regions, power restrictions are necessary for both industrial consumers and households, with emergency outages being enforced in some areas where previously announced schedules are no longer applicable.

Ukrenergo stated, “Due to the consequences of earlier Russian attacks, power limitation schedules are being applied across most regions of Ukraine. Emergency outages have been implemented in certain areas, and the previously published hourly disconnection schedules are not in effect there. We will return to the forecasted hourly schedules as soon as the situation stabilizes in the energy system.” Updates regarding schedule changes will be communicated by local energy companies.

According to Ukrenergo, electricity consumption has decreased. As of 9:30 AM on February 23, consumption levels were reported to be 7.5% lower than at the same time on the previous working day. This decline is attributed to rising temperatures across most regions and the necessity of implementing more extensive limitation measures in certain areas.

The company urged consumers in regions with scheduled outages to continue practicing energy conservation. They advised limiting the use of high-power electrical devices and, if possible, to shift energy-intensive activities to nighttime hours, specifically after 11 PM.

Ukraine is grappling with ongoing power outages due to damage from Russian attacks on energy infrastructure. While restoration efforts are in progress, consumers are advised to conserve energy as scheduled outages remain in effect across various regions.
