Details: The minister noted that Iran’s support for Russia’s aggressive war against Ukraine and oppression of its own citizens is part of the same policy of violence and disrespect for human dignity.

As a country that overcame a totalitarian and authoritarian regime, protested against oppression and defended its democratic elections, Ukraine values civil rights above all else; therefore, we call on the Iranian authorities to refrain from violence against the protesters.
We call on the international community to consider increasing pressure on the Iranian regime for its violence against its own people and support for Russia’s criminal war against Ukraine.”
Prehistory:
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommended citizens of Ukraine to leave Iran due to the worsening security situation in the country.
- Mass protests have been ongoing in Iran since December 28. Initially, due to the collapse of the national currency and huge inflation, the traders at the Grand Bazaar in Tehran staged a strike. Then the protests covered almost the entire country. After 10 days, two cities in the west of Iran came under the control of the protesters.
- Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei admitted that there are economic problems, but explained them as “the work of the enemy”. He also stated that “it’s useless to talk with rioters” and they “need to be put in their place.”
- More than 50 people have already died during the protests in Iran.
